As part of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union, the Department of Mobility and Public Works, together with De Vlaamse Waterweg, organized the Smart Shipping Conference aboard the Blue Rhapsody. And no, it was not docked just anywhere. The vessel came ashore especially for this event at the Port House in Antwerp. Two hundred participants came on board to discuss technology, legislation, and the future of autonomous shipping.

During the plenary sessions, moderated by Dorien Leyers, speakers explored the technological aspects and regulatory framework surrounding autonomous navigation in greater depth. Between sessions, the Primrose Trio provided live music. And to complete the experience, we quite literally gave the ship a voice. “Blue” was voiced by an actress, allowing the vessel itself to communicate with participants.

Alongside the plenary sessions, innovation also took center stage. During the exhibition area, various players from the sector had the opportunity to present their companies and technologies. From smart applications to bold future visions of autonomous shipping, everything stayed firmly on course. The expo zone grew into a vibrant meeting place.

Solving Challenges on Shore and at Sea.

Due to construction works around the Port House, parking for 200 guests proved challenging. The solution was simple: visitors parked at the Kinepolis Antwerp parking area, and we arranged shuttle services to and from the vessel. The tram stop at the Port House was not in service during the event hours, so we organized additional shuttles to pick up participants at the nearest operating stop. During lunch, the ship even cruised through the Port of Antwerp. The host made timely announcements to ensure participants could disembark if they were expected elsewhere. Everything remained under control, from start to finish.
