KMSKA Opening Weekend: Ensor Out of the Frame, Into the Gardens.
On September 28 and 29, 2024, we transformed the gardens of KMSKA into a living Ensor world. The goal? Kick off Ensor Year 2024 with a bang, bring KMSKA and its audience closer together, and do it all within the brand identity of ‘Het Schoonste Gevoel’. The experience needed to feel warm, festive, and above all, involve everyone from young to old.
Masks, magic, and packed stands.
From the very first step into the museum gardens, it was clear something special was happening. Impressive stilt-walkers in characterful costumes handed out boules de Berlin, and who would say no to that? They guided the audience toward Theater Stap, where warm and engaging performances followed one another, and the stands filled up again and again.
Living artworks.
Visitors could take photos with James Ensor himself, complete with stunning masks that transported them to another world. Face-paint artists brought Ensor’s whimsical universe to life on their skin. The flag performance on the stairs created a striking visual moment, and the musical act by Amoerfoe gave the weekend extra energy. Art was not only displayed here, it was truly brought to life.
From spectator to artist.
A highlight was the Tableau Vivant and Paint By Numbers. The audience became part of the artwork itself, coloring a large portrait of Ensor together according to numbered sections. Young and old collaborated side by side, and that shared experience was perhaps the most beautiful picture of all.
